Smolikas Mountain

Smolikas is the second highest mountain in Greece (2631 meters). It is near Vasilitsa and Tymfi Mountains, while a little further on the north there is Grammos Mountain. The whole region is of great ecological importance and thanks to limited human intervention, it is one of the most important wildlife reserves in Greece.

Pines, lammergeyers, firs and several kinds of decidious trees grow on its slopes, offering shelter to wolves, brown bears, roe deer, as well as a great number of bird and reptile species. The mountain offers a variety of mountain trails, all starting from the surrounding villages. In winter, the climb is quite difficult and you need to be extra cautious due to the frequent and intense snowfall. In summer the ascent to the mountain is easier but there is the risk of a storm. You can find mountain trails starting even at the most isolated villages such as Agia Paraskevi and Palioseli, north and south of the mountain respectively.
