The name Valia Calda means "Warm Valley" in Vlach. It is called this way due to the significant temperature variations in the course of 24 hours, with very high temperatures during the day and very low during the night. The icy "Warm Valley" is one of the coldest and humid places of Greece.
The landscape is impressive: a variety of peculiar morphological characteristics, lush vegetation, huge cliffs and beautiful streams. The conditions of the environment are vital for the life of a huge variety of animal and plant species. The place is covered by dense forests of Black - Leukoderma pine trees and beech trees, and is a refuge for many species of birds, among which are some rare raptors (vultures- eagles) and large mammals (bears - chamois- deer) which cannot be found in other areas of the country. The whole area is perhaps the most important habitat in Greece for the brown bear.
